A Closer Look: Thermalright
Ultra 120 eXtreme CPU Cooler
What is it exactly that gives this new cooler it’s “extreme”
status? It has been a long time since any cooler has
created this kind of hype and demand amongst our
customers, which is why we’ve decided to take a
closer look at this cooler.
Visually, this cooler looks exactly the same as the
older
Ultra 120, but with the addition of two extra heatpipes, which allow faster transfer of heat
from the base to the fins. Many manufacturers try to
add extra heatpipes to their coolers, but none has
achieved such grand results.
The Ultra 120 eXtreme has outperformed every single
air CPU cooler on the market according to
Anandtech’s recent review. This is also the only CPU
cooler available that overclocks the Intel X6800
processor up to 3.96GHz. Previously, this overclock
was only obtainable with high-end water cooling,
TEC, or phase-change solutions. Even better news is
that this performance was obtained using a
reasonably loud fan. The fan used in the tests was a
Scythe
SSF21F 120mm S-Flex Fan which produces 64CFM
of airflow with a reasonable 28dBA noise level; no need to use
blistering 100+ CFM fans with jet engine like noise
levels.
This cooler provides hardware to mount to both AMD
AM2 and Intel LGA775 sockets. Installation
does require the removal of your motherboard to
implement
Thermalright’s backplate and mounting
hardware for Intel LGA775. AMD AM2 users can use the
factory backplate, but will still need to remove the AM2
bracket. The special mounting hardware provides
foundation for an excellent mount for optimal
cooling performance. No matter how good your cooler
is, it won’t perform well if it isn’t properly
seated on the
CPU.
Overall, this is one of best
CPU coolers we've
encountered throughout the years and is a must have
for any true computer enthusiast.
